Not a day goes by that stress does not affect our lives. It comes at us from every angle. The commute home, job demands, family, and even the less personal but far-reaching situations found in the daily new.
We react to stress on three different levels: emotionally, physically, and mentally. In a stressful situation you may find your blood pressure raising, breathing quicken, and your heart begin to pound.
When the body is not able to utilize the energy created by stress, we may be left feeling emotionally and physically drained. We may become more susceptible to illness, tired, unable to handle any type of decision making. It is possible to reach a point where we feel we can no longer "handle" it.
Our adrenal glands (two triangular shaped glands located above the kidney) react to stress by releasing cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, into our bloodstream. Cortisol helps regulate blood pressure, cardiovascular functions, and metabolism. The adrenal glands are also responsible for manufacturing and releasing adrenaline, which gives us the "fight or flight" response.
To maintain optimal adrenal performance, it is important to provide the proper tools.
