The rationale behind amino-acid chelation is absorptive, not cosmetic. Zinc itself is a cofactor for more than 300 enzymes and is required for normal function of the immune system, including T-cell, B-cell, natural killer cell, and macrophage activity.† It is a structural component of Cu/Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD), a primary intracellular antioxidant enzyme, and preclinical research has associated zinc methionine specifically with stronger antioxidant activity than several other zinc forms tested, including reduced markers of lipid peroxidation and oxidative DNA damage.† Zinc is also required for normal insulin storage and secretion, for connective tissue and wound repair, and for healthy prostate and male reproductive tissue function.†
