The Fairy Candle of the Eastern Woods
In late summer, the shaded forests of eastern North America light up with tall, slender spires of tiny white flowers, some rising higher than a person. Old folk names call them fairy candles. Their scent keeps insects away, which earned the plant another name, bugbane, and its old Latin name, Cimicifuga: "the one that drives away bugs." The treasure, though, was never the flower. It was the dark, knotted root below, and the women who knew these woods had been using it for generations before anyone wrote it down.1

Native American communities use black cohosh root as a traditional herb, especially in women's care.1

Black cohosh is listed in the very first United States Pharmacopeia, the official book of American medicines.1

In Lynn, Massachusetts, Lydia Pinkham begins selling her famous Vegetable Compound, with black cohosh root in the formula. It becomes one of the best-known women's tonics in American history.2

| 20th century |
The root crosses the Atlantic. German makers turn it into a standardized extract, measured for its triterpene glycosides so every dose is consistent. That is the "European standardized" tradition on our label.1
|
| Today |
Black cohosh is one of the most widely studied botanicals in women's wellness, and every capsule of ours carries a measured 1 mg of triterpene glycosides.†

Three Herbs, Three Traditions

NORTH AMERICA
Black Cohosh
Actaea racemosa. The heart of the formula: a standardized root extract with a measured triterpene glycoside content, the compounds the European tradition uses to judge quality.†
|
THE MEDITERRANEAN
Chasteberry
Vitex agnus-castus. The small peppery fruit of the chaste tree, described by physicians of ancient Greece and kept in medieval monastery gardens, where it was known as "monk's pepper."†
|
CHINA
Dong Quai
Angelica sinensis. Chinese angelica root, used in Chinese herbal tradition for well over a thousand years and so closely tied to women's wellness that it is often called "female ginseng."†

Why Standardization Matters
A plain root powder can vary from harvest to harvest. A standardized extract is tested and adjusted so that each capsule carries the same measured amount of its key compounds. Ours is standardized to 2.5% triterpene glycosides, 1 mg in every capsule, and made under strict European quality standards.
That consistency is the "extra care" you are paying for: the same root, the same strength, bottle after bottle.†
