Rhamnus purshiana, known as Cascara Sagrada (Sacred Bark in Spanish), is the bark of the small Cascara tree native to North West Region of America. Cascara Sagrada was originally used by Native Americans for issues such as: Constipation, Digestive Problems, Joint & Muscle Pain, Gonorrhea, Gallstones, and Dysentery. Cascara Sagrada is one of anthraquinone-containing herbal medicines including the leaf and fruits of Senna, the latex of Aloe vera, and the root of the Rhubarb plant.
The Mechanism of Action of Cascara Sagrada, is due to the phytochemical compounds found in the bark. The bark contains Anthraquinone, that reacts with Intestinal Flora (bacteria found in the intestines) which cause muscle contractions in the intestines. It has been shown to inhibit the absorption of water and electrolytes in the large intestine, which causes an increase in volume of the bowel contents, leading to increased pressure to cause a laxative effect.
